Grade Point Scale (4.0 System)
The calculator uses this standard grading scale:
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B- | 2.7 | D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
How GPA is Calculated
Formula:
GPA = (Sum of Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits
Step-by-step:
- Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours
- Add all these values together (Quality Points)
- Divide by the total number of credits
Example Calculation
Courses Entered:
| Course | Grade | Credits | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus I | A | 4 | 4.0 | 16.0 |
| English | B+ | 3 | 3.3 | 9.9 |
| History | A- | 3 | 3.7 | 11.1 |
| Chemistry | B | 4 | 3.0 | 12.0 |
Calculation:
- Total Quality Points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 12.0 = 49.0
- Total Credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 4 = 14
- GPA: 49.0 ÷ 14 = 3.50
Result Display:
- Your GPA: 3.50
- Total Credits: 14.0
Important Notes
✅ Only completed courses count – You must enter both a grade AND credits for a course to be included
✅ Credits matter – A 4-credit course impacts your GPA more than a 1-credit course
✅ Partial credits allowed – You can enter 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, etc. for lab courses or special classes
✅ Courses without grades or credits are ignored – The calculator only includes courses with both fields filled
⚠️ Different schools may use different scales – Some schools use different grade point values; verify with your institution
