How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator

Two Calculation Modes:

Mode 1: Trip Cost (Default)

Calculate how much fuel and money you'll need for a trip.

Step 1: Select Trip Cost Mode. Click the "Trip Cost" button (already selected by default).

Step 2: Choose Unit System Select your preferred measurement system:

  • Imperial - Miles per Gallon (MPG)
  • Metric - Liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km)

Step 3: Enter Trip Distance. Input how far you'll be traveling.

Step 4: Enter Fuel Efficiency. Input your vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100 km). Check your car's specifications or recent fuel economy.

Step 5: Enter Fuel Price. Input the current price per gallon or liter in your area.

Step 6: Split Cost (Optional) Enter the number of passengers if you want to split the fuel cost.

Step 7: Round Trip (Optional) Check the "Round Trip" box to automatically double the distance.

Step 8: Calculate. Click "Calculate" to see:

  • Total fuel cost
  • Fuel needed
  • Cost per mile/kilometer
  • Cost per person (if splitting)

Mode 2: Fuel Efficiency

Calculate your vehicle's actual fuel efficiency.

Step 1: Select Fuel Efficiency Mode. Click the "Fuel Efficiency" button.

Step 2: Choose Unit System. Select Imperial (for MPG) or Metric (for L/100 km).

Step 3: Enter Distance Drive. Input the distance you drove since your last fill-up.

Step 4: Enter Fuel Used. Input how much fuel it took to refill your tank.

Step 5: Calculate. Click "Calculate" to see your vehicle's actual MPG or L/100km.

Example 1: Road Trip Planning

Scenario: 300-mile round trip, car gets 28 MPG, gas costs $3.50/gallon, splitting with 2 friends

  1. Mode: Trip Cost
  2. Units: Imperial
  3. Distance: 300
  4. Efficiency: 28 MPG
  5. Price: $3.50
  6. Passengers: 3
  7. Check Round Trip
  8. Click Calculate

Result: Total cost $75, each person pays $25!

Example 2: Check Your MPG

Scenario: Drove 350 miles, used 14 gallons to refill

  1. Mode: Fuel Efficiency
  2. Units: Imperial
  3. Distance: 350
  4. Fuel Used: 14
  5. Click Calculate

Result: Your car gets 25 MPG!
