How GPA is Calculated

Formula:

GPA = (Sum of Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Step-by-step:

  1. Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours
  2. Add all these values together (Quality Points)
  3. Divide by the total number of credits

Example Calculation

Courses Entered:

CourseGradeCreditsGrade PointsQuality Points
Calculus IA44.016.0
EnglishB+33.39.9
HistoryA-33.711.1
ChemistryB43.012.0

Calculation:

  • Total Quality Points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 12.0 = 49.0
  • Total Credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 4 = 14
  • GPA: 49.0 ÷ 14 = 3.50

Result Display:

  • Your GPA: 3.50
  • Total Credits: 14.0

Important Notes

Only completed courses count – You must enter both a grade AND credits for a course to be included

Credits matter – A 4-credit course impacts your GPA more than a 1-credit course

Partial credits allowed – You can enter 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, etc. for lab courses or special classes

Courses without grades or credits are ignored – The calculator only includes courses with both fields filled

⚠️ Different schools may use different scales – Some schools use different grade point values; verify with your institution
