A tile calculator helps you determine how many tiles you need for your flooring or wall tiling project. It accounts for the room dimensions, tile size, grout line width, and waste factor to give you an accurate tile count. This prevents over-ordering (wasting money) or under-ordering (requiring extra trips and potential color/batch matching issues).

Calculate tiles needed for your flooring or wall project

📐 Common tile sizes: 12×12″, 12×24″, 18×18″ (inches) | 300x300mm, 600x600mm (mm) | 30x30cm, 60x60cm (cm)
💡 Waste factor accounts for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. Use 10% for standard layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns.

How to Use the Tile Calculator

Here's a simple step-by-step guide to using the Tile Calculator:

Step 1: Select Project Type

Click one of the four buttons at the top:

  • Floor - If you're tiling a floor only
  • Wall - If you're tiling a wall only
  • Floor & Wall - If you're tiling both (like a bathroom)
  • Custom Area - If you already know the total square footage

Step 2: Choose Room Measurement Unit

Select how you'll measure your room:

  • Feet (ft) - Most common in the US
  • Meters (m) - Standard metric measurement
  • Inches (in) - For smaller spaces

Step 3: Enter Room Dimensions

Based on your project type, enter:

  • Floor: Room length and width
  • Wall: Wall length and height
  • Floor & Wall: Room length, width, and wall height
  • Custom: Total area in square feet

Step 4: Choose Tile Size Unit

Select the unit for your tile measurements:

  • Inches (in) - Common in US (12x12", 18x18")
  • Millimeters (mm) - International standard (300x300mm, 600x600mm)
  • Centimeters (cm) - Also common (30x30cm, 60x60cm)

Step 5: Enter Tile Size

Input the width and height of your tiles. For example:

  • 12 x 12 (if using inches)
  • 300 x 300 (if using mm)
  • 30 x 30 (if using cm)

Step 6: Set Grout Line Width

Enter the space between tiles (default is 0.25 inches). Standard grout lines are 1/8" to 1/4".

Step 7: Set Waste Factor

Enter waste percentage:

  • 10% - For straight, simple patterns
  • 15% - For diagonal or complex patterns
  • Higher percentages for more cuts, or if you're inexperienced

Step 8: Calculate

Click the "Calculate" button to see your results:

  • Total number of tiles needed
  • Total area to be tiled
  • Area with waste factor included
  • Number of boxes needed (if tiles come in boxes of 10 or 15)
  • Coverage area per tile

Step 9: Clear (Optional)

Click the "Clear" button to reset all fields and start a new calculation.

Example:

Scenario: Tiling a bathroom floor that's 10 feet x 8 feet with 12x12-inch tiles

  1. Select: Floor
  2. Room Unit: Feet
  3. Enter: Length = 10, Width = 8
  4. Tile Unit: Inches
  5. Tile Size: Width = 12, Height = 12
  6. Grout: 0.25 inches
  7. Waste: 10%
  8. Click Calculate

Result: You'll see exactly how many tiles you need, plus box quantities!
